Whale freedom. Whales are still being captured. For science they say. Give whales their freedom! A hint for the Japanese flag refers to their commercial whaling programs.
Yes, Japan. We think of Japan as a very civilized country. But in some ways, I just don’t understand why they want to keep hanging on to tradition.
Whaling… a little bit of history.
In times of industrial revolution, whale meat and blubber, could be turned into a type of oil which became increasingly important. It was practiced as an organized industry as early as 875 AD. But by the 1930s more than 50,000 whales were killed every year. BThe whale population had come to near extinction, banning whaling in many countries by 1969 and to a worldwide cessation of whaling as an industry in the late 1980s. That is not so long ago for my generation.
But Japan kept on whaling… In the name of science they said. Bullshit! You could buy whale meat everywhere in Japan. In 2018 Japan just gave up saying it is for science and sent out commercial whaling ships. Absolutely horrifying.
But there is a little bit of hope. And that is the people! They are starting to act. The thing we claim you should do too. Youth in Japan does not want whale meat any more. And demand is falling to it’s knees.
